Christian Counseling

Anxiety in a person’s heart weighs it down, But a good word makes it glad.

(Proverbs 12:25 NASB)

Have you been seeking a counselor who will provide counsel from a biblical basis? From personal and professional experience, I know how difficult it can be to find a Christian counselor, and one that seems like a good fit for where you are personally in your faith journey. Please read below for some info on Christian counselors in general, how my Christian beliefs inform my therapy practice, and why Christian counseling may be a good fit for you.

Christian counseling is the practice of integrating biblical truth into the counseling process. When someone states they are a “Christian counselor” it could mean vastly different things. Some people call themselves Christian counselors when they have some background in Christianity or have some of the worldview of others who call themselves Christian. Some people call themselves Christian counselors because they hold Christian beliefs in their personal lives but it doesn’t necessarily reflect or is integrated in their clinical work. Still others call themselves Christian counselors and, at the request of a client, actively integrate aspects of the Christian “walk” in their work.

What is a Christian counselor?

Christianity is the core of who I am. In my personal life, I actively work to follow the tenets of the Bible. I believe that a relationship with God, through things like reading the Bible and praying, is very important and something that I do in my personal life.  In my clinical practice, providing “Christian counseling” looks different depending on the preferences of the client with whom I am working. My therapy practice is informed by my Christian worldview, including things like the importance of treating all people with kindness and grace. For clients who would like Christian practices actively integrated in therapy, I can include activities such as praying for a client at the end of a session or discussing Bible passages that relate to the situation a client is currently experiencing.

What makes ME a Christian Counselor?

Christian and non-Christians alike have different reasons for why they might choose a Christian counselor, from exploration of spirituality to faith discussion. I have found that some of my Christian clients have expressed that they want to work with someone with a shared belief system so that they do not receive counsel/advice that is in conflict with their values. My clients (who request it) have appreciated biblical help and prayer as they find these powerful in the healing of their current mental health issues. An important note: Although many people choose to work with me because they are specifically looking for a Christian counselor, I am respectful of different belief systems and do not impose my belief system on others.
